URAN considers energy-efficient technologies for research and education
Published: November 10, 2021
Advanced energy-saving projects were the topic of the 10th International Scientific and Practical Conference in Ukraine, where Volodymyr Galagan, Technical Director of the Ukrainian national research and education network URAN Association, gave a report. He spoke about URAN’s participation in the international EaPConnect project funded by the European Union under the EU4Digital initiative, and shared URAN’s considerations for the use of energy-efficient technologies.
EaPConnect has expanded the channels and services of the pan-European research and education (R&E) network GÉANT for the Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries, has provided their researchers and educators with the opportunity to participate in regional and international research programmes, and created conditions for the use of state-of-the-art technologies in various fields – as NRENs (national research and education networks) use advanced technologies not only in the field of telecommunications but also to support related activities.
«Data centres are very energy-intensive. The transition to green energy sources for data centres can have a significant impact on the region’s environmental performance. At the URAN Association we believe that creating an energy-efficient data centre that uses renewable energy sources is an important future-proofing task»
Volodymyr Galagan, URAN Association, Technical Director
Volodymyr Galagan explained that one of the important EaPConnect goals is to connect universities to the GÉANT network. In Ukraine, such connection is available through the URAN network, via two channels of 100 Gigabits per second capacity.
He stressed that URAN Association can meet the demand for digital services for cooperation in research and education and can offer the Ukrainian research and education (R&E) community access to the pan-European GÉANT network and its unique services: eduroam, eduGAIN, eduVPN and many others.
«We strive to facilitate the development of Ukraine through the support of our R&E community, as well as to care about the environment and the safe future of our country – and therefore we pay attention to energy-efficient technologies»
Volodymyr Galagan, URAN Association, Technical Director
