eduroam - worldwide WiFi roaming service for academia

eduroam stands for education roaming

eduroam is accessible in thousands of locations in more than a hundred countries

Who is eduroam for?

For researchers, academics, students and employees of scientific and educational institutions. Especially in demand on trips: both foreign and local.

Why is it good?

Easy-to-use

the connection is automatic, you need just one personal account wherever you are. Once you’ve connected for the first time you never need to enter your details again, eduroam will automatically connect you whenever you’re in range of an eduroam hotspot. You do not use shared guest accounts or log in using insecure web front ends.

Widespread

eduroam is available at universities, campuses, research centres, academies, schools, colleges and other research and education institutions in more than 100 countries around the world.  As eduroam grows, more and more hotspots are appearing in additional places such as libraries, museums and public spaces such as railway stations and coffee shops. To check if there are access points where you are travelling, take a look at the eduroam coverage map.

Secure

uses 802.1X end-to-end encryption for maximum security.

Benefits of eduroam

For users

eduroam gives them seamless internet connectivity, whether they’re moving across campus or spending time studying or working at another research and education institution. Besides, eduroam is highly valued by millions of users around the world and providing eduroam generates real value to the student and researcher community. For example, offering eduroam in student halls of residence provides a secure, scalable and easy-to-use WiFi service to students and seamless user experience across all devices.

For institutions

eduroam provides a single solution that accommodates all the mobile connectivity requirements of a campus, supporting:

  • local users connecting to the local network – seamlessly moving around the campus and to halls of residence or distributed facilities
  • visitors connecting to the local network – removing the need for insecure guest accounts
  • local users connecting to other participating networks around the world

How to get eduroam?

In Ukraine, eduroam is provided by URAN Association. The service is provided to a research and education institution which then creates accounts for its end users (students, researchers, teachers or other employees).

You can email your request for getting eduroam on dopomoga@uran.ua

What does eduroam coast?

Thanks to global agreements, the eduroam WiFi roaming service is free-of-charge to end users and the savings from both management of visitor access and reduction in data roaming costs for travelling staff can be substantial.

For educational institutions, the cost of eduroam is included in the full package of services of the URAN Association.

Further information

RADIUS remote authorization technology is required to support eduroam. For institutions who do not run suitable RADIUS technology, the GÉANT Managed IdP service can be used by URAN to help implement eduroam access. Such a practice has already been successfully implemented at the Institute of Magnetism of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, with a team of 56 researchers, and at the Mykolaiv Observatory, with a team of 20 researchers.
