GÉANT initiates charitable support for Ukrainian research and education institutions

Published: 05 April 2022

Thanks to a new initiative of the GÉANT Association, URAN will be able to maintain the Ukrainian network for research and education (R&E), even in the unstable financial conditions of wartime – and, after the victory, to rebuild what has been destroyed.

Therefore, GÉANT and the Vietsch Foundation have launched a special project. Legal and financial management of the project will be carried out by the Vietsch Foundation, a non-profit charity established in the Netherlands in 2014. Funds donated by the European NRENs (National Research and Education Networks) will be used primarily to cover URAN’s operational costs for network support. This will ensure the further provision of URAN services to R&E institutions of Ukraine during the war.

If necessary, the fund will also help URAN staff to cover living expenses and thus help preserve the knowledge and skills of the Ukrainian NREN.

In the future, the funds will be used to replace network equipment that was destroyed or lost during the war – and thus ensure the recovery of Ukrainian research and education as soon as possible.

“This initiative once again confirms what a supportive community GÉANT is. Ordeals like these show the true value of partnership and friendship”.

Yevhenii Preobrazhenskyi, Executive Director, URAN

GÉANT staff in close cooperation with URAN will develop proposals for the best use of funds. These proposals will be reviewed by the Vietsch Foundation Board with the participation of the chair of the GÉANT Board as an advisor. All NRENs that donate to the fund will receive a regular report on the use of project funds.

URAN is grateful to the GÉANT Association for its invaluable support.

Yevhenii Preobrazhenskyi, Executive Director of URAN Association, has commented on the news.
